Destination Newark surveyed business owners ranging from startups to established enterprises across a variety of industries to gain business advice for existing and budding entrepreneurs. These business owners all have one thing in common–they are like-minded in seeking a socially conscious urban renaissance. Some are CUEED certified, indicating that they have also completed training at The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development (CUEED) at Rutgers Business School.

Here’s what they had to say:

24-year old MZM is a full-service, woman-owned construction management and transportation company generating more than $5 million in revenue annually. Clients include Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and New Jersey-based entities such as NJPAC, the MetLife Stadium, and the Newark Liberty International Airport. The company is certified to handle solid waste disposal in several states, has its own fleet of trucks, and can provide customized transportation programs for its clients.

A pioneer in the construction industry as the female owner of a multimillion-dollar firm, Marjorie Perry was tapped by CUEED to be one of the founding members of its entrepreneur council.
Secret to Success: “Consistency and customer focus are two of the reasons I’ve stayed in business for so long. I treat my employees well, I’m passionate about continuing education, and I stay relevant. I found my niche and stayed in that lane, becoming an expert.”

Business Advice: “Find and improve your leadership skills. Know your market, be adaptable, and never stop learning.”
